Practice Management

Compare Practice Management Platforms

A decision surface for law firms narrowing their practice management shortlist. Six active options plus one legacy advisory context — with firm-size fit, setup expectations, and clear exclusion language. No rankings, no scores, no checkmark grids.

What this covers

General-purpose practice management platforms for solo through mid-size firms. PI-specific platforms (CasePeer, Filevine) are a separate category — see the PI case management comparison. Intake and CRM tools (Clio Grow, Lawmatics) are also scoped separately.

What this doesn't do

This matrix does not pick a winner or recommend a platform for your specific firm. Use it to identify realistic options and common exclusion triggers, then use the platform selector for a narrowed recommendation or the free Intake Audit for a written assessment.

Platform Firm size Setup Where it fits Skip if
Clio Full-stack cloud PM with the deepest integration ecosystem Referral partner
SoloSmallMid-size
Medium Implementation support recommended; typically live in 2–6 weeks

Firms on a growth path that will add tools over time. Covers billing, intake, and matter management in one place with 200+ integrations. Strongest when Clio Manage and Clio Grow are both in scope.

High-volume PI needing specialized case staging. Firms where MyCase's bundled pricing or PracticePanther's simplicity is a better size match.

MyCase Bundled all-in-one — intake, billing, and PM at a single price No commercial relationship
SoloSmall
Low Self-configured; typically live in days

Solo or small firm (2–10 users) that wants intake, billing, and matter management bundled without add-ons. Fastest alternative to evaluate against Clio for cost-sensitive firms.

Firms that depend on a large integration ecosystem. Firms planning to grow past 10–15 attorneys — a migration would likely be required.

PracticePanther Fast-to-deploy PM for small firms that need less, sooner Referral partner
SoloSmall
Low Self-configured; typically live in days

Solo or 2–5 attorney firm that needs billing, matter management, and a client portal operational in days with minimal configuration. Cost-sensitive firms for whom Clio's depth is excess.

Firms planning to grow past 10 attorneys. High-volume PI. Firms needing deep document automation or a broad integration ecosystem.

Smokeball Automatic time capture + document assembly for Windows-based small firms No commercial relationship
SoloSmall
Low Self-configured; typically live in days

Small firms with heavy templated document work (estate planning, real estate, wills/trusts) or persistent time-leakage problems. Automatic time capture is the primary differentiator — no manual entry.

PI firms needing complex case staging. Firms wanting broad integration ecosystems. Practices planning significant headcount growth.

LEAP Microsoft Office-embedded PM with built-in general accounting No commercial relationship
SoloSmallMid-size
Medium Implementation support recommended; typically live in 2–6 weeks

Windows-primary firm that wants document automation, billing, and matter management inside Word and Outlook — no context-switching, no separate QuickBooks. Strong for estate planning, real estate, and family law.

Mac-primary or browser-first workflows. Firms needing a broad third-party integration ecosystem. Firms evaluating primarily for mobile access or intake CRM depth.

Rocket Matter Billing-depth cloud PM for established small-to-mid-size firms No commercial relationship
SmallMid-size
Medium Implementation support recommended; typically live in 2–6 weeks

Established firm (5–25 users) evaluating Clio alternatives or migrating from older desktop PM software. The billing and timekeeping engine is the primary appeal.

High-volume PI needing specialized case staging. Firms choosing primarily on integration depth. Solo or very small firms where MyCase or PracticePanther would onboard faster.

Tabs3 Legacy / migration context Desktop-oriented practice management and billing — mainly relevant in stay-vs.-migrate evaluations. No commercial relationship
SmallMid-size
Medium Implementation support recommended; typically live in 2–6 weeks

Relevant when evaluating whether a desktop-oriented PM workflow still fits a firm's current or near-term needs, or when a stay-vs.-migrate decision needs to be structured before assuming a cloud migration is required.

Less relevant when building a browser-first shortlist from scratch. Not a default new-purchase option for firms starting fresh.

How to use this matrix

Start with firm size and setup. A solo attorney who needs to be operational in days has a different shortlist than a 20-person firm migrating from legacy software. Eliminating on those two dimensions first reduces the field quickly before comparing fit and exclusion criteria.

The comparison pages linked in the matrix go deeper on individual head-to-head decisions — covering specific tradeoffs, common evaluation mistakes, and Songbird's commercial relationships for each pair.

The platform selector applies these same dimensions interactively based on your firm's specific answers.
