Clio Grow — Intake and CRM for the Clio Ecosystem
Clio Grow is not the same product as Clio Manage. It handles the front end of client acquisition: lead tracking, intake forms, automated follow-up, and pre-engagement workflows.

Clio Manage vs. Clio Grow
Two Products. One Ecosystem. An Important Distinction.
Many firms evaluate "Clio" without realizing they are actually evaluating two separate products. Clio Manage is the practice management platform: matter tracking, billing, trust accounting, time capture, and document storage. Clio Grow is the intake and CRM layer: lead pipeline management, intake questionnaires, automated follow-up sequences, and client onboarding workflows.
They are priced separately. A firm can subscribe to Manage only, to Grow only, or to both. The combination (often called the Clio Suite or a bundled plan depending on the tier) covers the full client lifecycle from first inquiry through matter close and billing.
The clarification matters because firms often either buy more than they need (adding Grow before their intake volume justifies it) or less than they need (adding Grow too late, after intake problems have already become chronic). Understanding what each product actually does is the starting point.
What Clio Grow Does
Front-End Client Acquisition, Not Matter Management
Clio Grow focuses on everything that happens before a matter is opened. Its core functions:
Track potential clients from first inquiry through consultation and engagement. Assign stages, set follow-up tasks, and manage the intake pipeline the way a sales CRM manages leads.
Build intake forms that capture the information you need before a consultation: matter type, relevant dates, conflict check fields, and case details. Forms can be sent by email or text and populate contact records in Clio.
Configure triggered follow-up sequences for leads who haven't responded, clients awaiting a consultation, or prospects who haven't returned intake forms. Reduces manual follow-up work for firms with high lead volume.
Send engagement letters, gather signed documents, and move a client from prospect to active matter status through Clio's client portal, keeping the handoff between Grow (intake) and Manage (matter) inside a single system.
A Reasonable Fit When
Firm is already on Clio Manage and needs a dedicated intake pipeline and lead follow-up — or is evaluating the full Clio suite from the start and intake automation is a core requirement.
Likely Not the Right Fit When
Firms not in the Clio ecosystem. Firms whose intake is already managed by a dedicated tool like Lawmatics. Firms that want bundled intake without a separate product or add-on cost.

Songbird's Role With Clio Grow
Implementation Support — Referral Partner
Songbird Strategies implements Clio (including Clio Grow) for law firm clients. This includes intake workflow design, pipeline configuration, form setup, and integration with Clio Manage. Clio Grow implementation is generally handled as part of a broader Clio engagement, not as a standalone project.
Songbird is a referral partner for Clio. If a firm we are working with signs up for Clio Manage or Clio Grow through our referral link, Songbird may receive a referral fee. This does not change our evaluation of fit — we cover MyCase, PracticePanther, and other alternatives in this directory precisely because Clio is not the right choice for every firm.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Clio Manage is the core practice management platform: matter management, billing, time tracking, trust accounting, and document storage. Clio Grow is a separate product focused on the pre-engagement side: client intake forms, lead tracking, automated follow-up, and client onboarding workflows. They are different products with different subscriptions. Some firms use both; many use only Manage. If you are evaluating "Clio" for your firm, it is worth clarifying which product — or combination — you are actually evaluating.
-
Not necessarily. Clio Manage can handle basic intake and client communication on its own. Clio Grow becomes relevant when a firm has meaningful lead volume, wants automated follow-up sequences, needs a structured intake pipeline, or is losing potential clients because of gaps in the pre-engagement process. For a solo firm with steady referrals and simple intake, Manage alone is often sufficient. For a firm with a high-volume intake problem, Grow adds the CRM automation layer that Manage lacks.
-
Clio Grow is designed as a standalone product but works best when integrated with Clio Manage. A firm could technically use Grow for intake and a different platform for matter management, but this is an uncommon configuration and creates data sync complexity. Most firms using Grow are also on Manage.
-
Lawmatics is a purpose-built legal CRM with deeper automation features: more complex intake workflows, multi-step follow-up sequences, and broader email marketing capability. Clio Grow is simpler and integrates more tightly with Clio Manage. If a firm is already deep in the Clio ecosystem and needs a functional intake pipeline without complexity overhead, Grow is the path of least resistance. If intake automation and lead nurturing are the primary problem and the firm wants a purpose-built legal CRM with deeper automation capability regardless of PM platform, Lawmatics is worth evaluating independently.
