Intake & CRM
Compare Intake & CRM Tools for Law Firms
A decision surface for firms choosing between intake automation and CRM options. Two CRM tools compared as genuine peers — plus the reception channel that feeds whichever system you choose. No rankings, no scores, no checkmark grids.
What this covers
Standalone legal CRM tools and ecosystem intake layers for solo through mid-size firms. The reception channel (Smith.ai) is included because it is part of most intake stack decisions, but is framed separately — it is not a CRM peer.
What this doesn't do
This matrix does not recommend a tool for your specific firm. Use it to clarify which tools are realistic options, then use the platform selector for a narrowed fit or the free Intake Audit for a written assessment with your firm's details.
| Platform | Firm size | Setup | Where it fits | Skip if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lawmatics Standalone legal CRM — automated intake workflows, lead nurturing, and multi-step follow-up sequences Referral partner | SoloSmallMid-size | Medium Implementation support recommended; typically live in 2–6 weeks | High-inbound firms (PI, family law, immigration) where intake conversion is the primary revenue lever. Multi-step follow-up automation, lead scoring, and referral source tracking are the core reason to choose it. Integrates with Clio, Filevine, and other PM platforms. | Low-volume practices. Firms that already have a working intake process and need PM or billing first. Very small firms unlikely to operationalize a full CRM workflow. |
| Clio Grow Clio's intake and CRM layer — pre-engagement automation inside the Clio ecosystem (requires Clio Manage) Referral partner (through Clio) | SoloSmallMid-size | Medium Implementation support recommended; typically live in 2–6 weeks | Firms already on Clio Manage that want a structured intake pipeline and automated follow-up without adding a separate CRM platform. The natural intake choice for the full Clio suite — avoids a separate sync between PM and CRM. | Firms not on Clio Manage — Clio Grow cannot function as a standalone CRM. Firms needing CRM portability across PM platforms. High-volume intake practices where Lawmatics' deeper automation sequences are required. |
| Smith.ai Reception channel AI-hybrid virtual receptionist — answers calls 24/7, qualifies leads, and routes into whichever intake/CRM system the firm uses Affiliate | SoloSmallMid-size | Low Self-configured; typically live in days | Firms losing potential clients to voicemail or after-hours calls. Pairs with both Lawmatics and Clio Grow — call data and new contacts flow downstream into whichever intake pipeline is in place. | Fewer than 20 calls/month. Firms with highly specialized intake scripts Smith.ai configuration cannot support. Not a CRM replacement — does not manage follow-up, pipelines, or lead nurturing. |
How to use this matrix
Lawmatics and Clio Grow are genuine peers for firms actively evaluating intake CRM — but only if the firm is on or evaluating Clio Manage does Clio Grow enter the decision. For firms on any other PM platform (Filevine, MyCase, PracticePanther, LEAP), Lawmatics is the standalone option to evaluate.
Smith.ai is a different kind of decision: call answering and lead capture at the point of first contact. It pairs with either CRM and is worth evaluating independently of the Lawmatics vs. Clio Grow question.
Immigration-focused practices: Docketwise handles intake as part of a full immigration practice management system. It is not a general-purpose CRM and is not included here. See the Docketwise platform overview →
